About Louise Whelan
AUSTRALIANS ALL
As I work on this project and move around the different communities, I feel privileged to be in the presence of such diversity. Through this series of photographs I’m sharing a glimpse of a huge range of unique cultural experiences encompassing music, dance, visual arts, exotic foods, ancient crafts, ceremonies, family meals and everyday happenings of the ethnic communities.
Working with the State Library of NSW, this project has enormous cultural and historical significance for all Australian’s as the photographers document approximately one hundred and fifty different ethnic groups.
Photographs are being collected of individuals, family and community groups, within their family homes, at festivals, gatherings, events or significant religious ceremonies or just going about their business. So far the range of images has been as diverse as the subjects. There are family portraits, individual portraits, shots of traditional food being cooked, traditional dress and objects of ethnic significance.
A selection of the photographs will be chosen for major public venues and travelling exhibitions in places such as NSW Parliament and Canberra
A book of the photographs and cultural information as part of this important project is also planned. The book will be a celebration of the cultural richness and diversity of the ethnic communities that contribute to the changing face of the Nation.
